Stockton, CA — In an inspiring collaboration between the City of Stockton and United Way, a unique program is making waves among local nonprofits, aiming to bolster their growth and operational effectiveness. Founded by Vince Carter of Team Elevate, a cross-fit training initiative for youth, the program has become a beacon of hope for organizations striving to make a significant impact with limited resources.

Kristen Birtwhistle, the dynamic president and CEO of United Way of San Joaquin County, spearheads the nonprofit capacity building program. This comprehensive initiative spans nine months and is meticulously designed to cover critical areas such as governance, board development, infrastructure, revenue generation, community engagement, marketing, and branding. Birtwhistle's vision is to "sizzle up" nonprofits, enhancing their strength and sustainability.

With over 2,000 nonprofits in San Joaquin County, many of which operate on budgets of $50,000 or less, the disparity between large and small organizations is stark. The capacity building program seeks to bridge this gap, according to Valentino Silva of Visionary Home Builders of California. Silva sees the program as a catalyst for collaborative partnerships and achieving ambitious goals that align with each nonprofit's mission and vision.

The need for such a program is evident, as demonstrated by the increase in participation from 15 nonprofits in its inaugural year to 25 in the following cycle. This expansion reflects the growing demand for support among smaller nonprofits seeking to enhance their capabilities and reach within the community.

For Carter and other participants, the program offers more than just training; it provides a framework for accountability, a value Carter emphasizes in his work with young people at Team Elevate. The goal is to equip these organizations not just to survive but to thrive and sustain their efforts year after year, contributing to the greater good of the Stockton community.

The application process for the nonprofit capacity building program begins in the fall, offering a new cohort of local nonprofits the chance to transform their operations and impact. Through this initiative, Stockton demonstrates a committed effort to nurture the growth and effectiveness of its nonprofit sector, ensuring a stronger, more vibrant community for all.
