In a bid to immortalize two of the city's fallen first responders, the Stockton Police Officers Association and the Stockton Professional Firefighters have suggested naming the new library on Morada Lane in their honor.

The $14.5 million library, under construction since March 2021, is set to be completed this summer. As part of a public involvement initiative, the city of Stockton had opened an online survey in April for residents to propose names for the library.

Both unions utilized this platform and penned open letters late May, proposing the new library be named "The Jimmy Inn & Max Fortuna Memorial Library," in honor of Stockton Police Department Officer Jimmy Inn and Stockton Fire Department Captain Max Fortuna. Tragically, both men were shot and killed in the line of duty.

"The loss of Captain Fortuna and Officer Inn have left holes, not only in their respective departments but in the community," said Stockton Professional Firefighters President Mario Gardea. "Naming the library after these brave men would serve as a constant reminder to the community of their sacrifices and dedication."

Officer Inn was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call on La Cresta Way in Stockton on May 11, 2021. Months later, on January 31, 2022, Captain Fortuna was shot and killed during a dumpster fire incident near Washington and Aurora Streets.

The city will continue to accept nominations for the library's name until 5:30 p.m. on June 16.
