The San Joaquin Community Foundation's Delta Aquatic Center in Stockton is set to benefit from a $2.5 million investment designated for the project's planning phase.
The funds, approved by the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy Board, will enable the creation of an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant water sports facility situated along the delta in Stockton.
With an estimated total cost of $15 million, the center aims to facilitate access to the 700 miles of waterways around Stockton for small, human-powered watercraft. The project's objectives include enhancing recreational and tourism access to the Delta waterways, while also offering educational and employment opportunities for the local community.
Currently, four potential sites for the center are being evaluated, featuring locations near Monte Diablo Avenue along the San Joaquin River, the Smith Canal, and the Calaveras River. Upon completion of the planning phase—comprising project design, planning, permit acquisition, and outreach efforts—the project is expected to be ready for construction.
Once completed, the Delta Sculling Center will relocate to the new facility, offering programs tailored for youth, disadvantaged, or disabled individuals. Funding for the project will be sourced from a combination of public, private, and corporate sectors.
