Stockton police unveiled surveillance footage on Wednesday shedding light on the early August shooting incident involving a police sergeant. The video captures three suspects fleeing the scene, seemingly firing shots as they make their escape.

The incident took place on the morning of Aug. 2 near Gateway Court and Kentfield Road. The sergeant, who had been in the vicinity searching for a carjacking suspect, attempted to halt a vehicle. This resulted in a chase that culminated in the vicinity where the shooting occurred.

Amidst a foot pursuit, the sergeant was tragically shot in the chest and shoulder regions. The police have confirmed that the sergeant did not return fire during the encounter.

Sunthawon "Benny" Savon, 20, has been apprehended in relation to the shooting. Savon now faces an array of charges, including carjacking, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing a peace officer, and possessing a stolen vehicle.

In the aftermath of the incident, police had detained three to four individuals. The investigation remains ongoing, as authorities seek to ascertain their involvement, if any, in the carjacking or shooting.

The newly-released footage reveals at least three individuals retreating from the crime scene, appearing to discharge their firearms in the process. The Stockton Police Department urges anyone with information about the incident to get in touch via their non-emergency line at 209-937-8377 or the investigations division at 209-937-8323.
