Stockton, CA — In a pioneering move to combat the spread of flu and COVID-19, the Montezuma Fire District in Stockton has introduced a vending machine offering free health supplies, including masks, sanitizer, and COVID tests, to the community.
As the holiday season approaches and families plan to gather, the need for such health supplies increases. Stockton residents can now access these essential items at the fire station, ensuring they are well-equipped to stay healthy amidst the ongoing pandemic.
Fire Chief Edward Martel expressed satisfaction with the community's response to the vending machine initiative. "It's worked very well and the public is taking it very well,” he stated. The convenience is matched with technology, as the machine is equipped with a transmitter that alerts the supplier when stocks are running low, guaranteeing a constant availability of supplies.
In an effort to accommodate everyone, Martel highlighted the fire district's commitment to accessibility: “If we have individuals that are coming late at night and we're not able to facilitate them, we leave them literally out in a box outside of the session.”
This public health initiative arrives at a time when San Joaquin County is witnessing a stabilization in COVID case rates following a summer surge. Public health officials now focus more on wastewater rates and hospital admissions to gauge the pandemic's status. With 22 new hospital admissions and a test positivity rate of 4%, the county is taking a proactive approach to health management.
The vending machines also serve as a resource for fire staff who might suspect exposure to the virus during their shifts. This immediate access to testing and protective gear is a critical step in ensuring the safety and health of essential workers.
There are two additional locations for these health supply vending machines: one at the San Joaquin County Public Health Services building on East Hazelton and another at the county human services agency on East Washington Street.

With an emphasis on prevention, doctors in the region are urging everyone six months and older to receive both the COVID and flu vaccines ahead of the winter season. Additionally, the RSV vaccine is being recommended for older populations who are at higher risk.
