In Lodi, a concerning trend of escalating crime, including theft, burglary, shootings, and homicides, has left the community uneasy. This situation was recently brought into focus by CBS13 following a deadly shooting at a local business on Friday night, marking yet another violent incident in the city's recent history.

Residents, like the Virnoche family who have been Lodi locals since the 90s, are witnessing a noticeable shift in the city's safety landscape. Todd Virnoche shared his own experience of theft, where approximately $6,000 worth of tools were stolen from his service truck. Laurie Virnoche, reflecting on the broader changes in Lodi, noted an increase in homelessness and other social issues over the last decade.

The past two months have been particularly troubling for Lodi, with an uptick in homicide cases. Todd Virnoche observed an alarming readiness to resort to gun violence, even though he hasn’t heard of many murders. October saw the arrest of a man suspected of a double homicide, and another individual was charged with first-degree murder for killing a homeless person. More recently, in November, a teenager was tragically shot and killed on Hale Road.

Despite these disturbing events, including the ongoing search for the suspect in the latest business shooting, some Lodi residents maintain a sense of relative safety in the downtown area. One man expressed his feeling of security, suggesting that such incidents are becoming more common across various places. Laurie Virnoche echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of not living in fear despite the apparent dangers.

CBS13 has reached out to the Lodi Police Department for updates on the investigation into Friday's shooting but is yet to receive a response. This surge in crime has put the community on high alert, and many are looking for reassurance and effective action from local authorities.

The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Lodi in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. The city, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, is now grappling with a wave of crime that threatens its sense of community and security.
