The resignation of Lodi City Councilman Shakir Khan has made headlines after he was hit with new charges.
Lodi City Councilman Shakir Khan has agreed to step down after facing new charges. In a video captured after the announcement of the charges, Lodi Mayor Mikey Hothi advised Khan to resign for the sake of his family.
Hothi stated that other members of the council also believed that Khan should step down. After considering the advice, Khan agreed to resign and signed a letter of resignation. However, Khan's attorney claims that the resignation was coerced, and Khan denies stepping down.
Khan is expected to return to court in April to face several charges, including causing, procuring, or allowing false voter registration of self or another person, submission of fraudulent registration to the Secretary of State, submission of fraudulent candidacy petition, aiding/abetting the commission of fraud at any election, subscription of fictitious names to nomination petitions, false nomination/declaration of candidacy, fraudulently casting votes, and procuring/assisting/counseling/advising another not qualified to vote.
