Thaddeus Smith III, a Stockton native and proud graduate of the Stockton Unified School District (SUSD), is running to represent Area 4 on the Stockton Unified School District Board of Education. A former Edison High School student and inaugural student at Commodore, Smith’s ties to the community run deep, motivating him to improve the district for future generations.
Smith brings a track record of community leadership to his candidacy. Recently serving as the chair of SUSD’s African American Black Parent Advisory Committee, he focused on fostering parental engagement and holding district officials accountable. Through this role, he gained firsthand experience in advocating for quality and culturally inclusive education, something he intends to prioritize if elected. “I am running to restore accountability and trust within our district,” Smith explained, adding that he aims to affirm cultural diversity, inspire parental engagement, and create more educational opportunities for every student in SUSD.
A major focus of Smith’s platform is rebuilding trust between the community and the school board. He believes that strong, transparent leadership is essential to bridge the gaps he sees in the district, particularly when it comes to supporting students, parents, and teachers. “I want to bring back togetherness to our community,” he said, emphasizing his dedication to fostering a respectful and productive environment within SUSD’s leadership. Smith plans to address the “toxicity” he feels has impacted the district in recent years, promising to work collaboratively with all stakeholders for the benefit of Stockton’s schools.
Smith describes himself as fearless and tenacious, qualities he sees as essential to advocating for positive change. He is committed to tackling the board’s challenges head-on, explaining, “My name is Thaddeus, and that means courage. I will have the tenacity to move forward once I am trustee on the board.”
Outside of his work in education and advocacy, Smith is also a self-proclaimed foodie. Having spent nearly 15 years in Brooklyn, New York, he brings a diverse palate back to Stockton, where his favorite dining spot is Market Tavern. He appreciates its blend of quality food and welcoming atmosphere, likening it to the vibe of New York City.
Smith’s campaign centers on trust, accountability, and a vision for an inclusive, high-quality education system in Stockton. He hopes to bring his dedication and experience to the SUSD Board to create meaningful, lasting change for students and the community.
