Texas Woman Arrested After Running Over 13-Year-Old Girl Twice in ‘Reckless Attempt’ to Free Her From Under Car, Police Say
OVERTON, TX – A 35-year-old Texas woman is behind bars after police say she made a “tragic and reckless decision” by running over a 13-year-old girl twice during an accident on school property.
The Incident at Overton ISD
According to the Overton Police Department, the ordeal began on Saturday, Sept. 27, when a teenage girl was accidentally struck by a car on Overton Independent School District property and became pinned beneath the vehicle.
Instead of calling 911 immediately, adults at the scene tried to free the girl themselves. When their efforts failed, one of them — identified as Angel Rupkey — allegedly got behind the wheel and drove over the child a second time in an attempt to “dislodge” her.
Teen Airlifted to Hospital
The girl suffered additional injuries from the second impact and was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital. She remains hospitalized in stable condition, officials confirmed.
The Overton Fire Department and Christus EMS responded quickly once the accident was officially reported.
School District Responds
In a statement posted to Facebook, Overton ISD expressed gratitude to first responders and sympathy for the girl and her family:
“We are especially thankful for the quick response of our local first responders, and our hearts are with the young girl and her family during this very difficult time.”
Police clarified that none of the adults or children involved were Overton residents or students.
Arrest and Charges
An arrest warrant was issued for Rupkey, who was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on Tuesday.
She has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held at the Smith County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Community Outrage
The case has sparked outrage, with many calling Rupkey’s actions reckless and avoidable. Critics argue that calling emergency responders immediately could have prevented the girl’s additional injuries.
