Tennessee Traffic Stop Uncovers Nearly $1M in Stolen Checks Hidden in Lunchboxes
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — What began as a routine traffic stop in north Knoxville turned into a major theft investigation after deputies discovered nearly $1 million in stolen checks concealed inside two lunchboxes, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO).
Traffic Stop Leads to Major Find
The incident occurred around 1:42 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, when a deputy pulled over a black Infiniti SUV traveling northbound on Clinton Highway. Deputies said they immediately smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle.
The front-seat passenger, identified as Dontray Ligon, 28, told deputies the SUV belonged to him and consented to a search.
During the search, officers found two lunchboxes stuffed with stolen mail — much of it containing checks and financial documents.
Suspect Arrested and Identified as Postal Worker
KCSO investigators later confirmed that Ligon is employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Knoxville. He was taken into custody without incident.
According to detectives, the recovered mail was linked to multiple victims across the area, with losses estimated at $972,051.63.
Felony Charges Filed
Ligon faces Class A felony charges for theft of $250,000 or more and mail theft exceeding $250,000. Additional charges may be filed as federal postal inspectors continue to assist with the case.
Authorities believe the thefts occurred over an extended period and may involve mail stolen directly from a postal facility.
Community Alert Issued
Investigators are urging anyone who suspects their mail may have been stolen to contact the KCSO Property Crimes Unit at 865-215-2243 or email crimetips@knoxsheriff.org.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing as they work with federal partners to determine the full scope of the thefts.
