Surry County Weather Alert: Thunderstorms Bring Pea-Sized Hail and Gusty Winds Friday Night
SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — Residents faced strong thunderstorms Friday evening that delivered pea-sized hail and wind gusts up to 30 mph, according to an alert from the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, VA.
Storm Details
At 8:44 p.m., Doppler radar detected a cluster of strong storms near Dobson, moving northeast at 20 mph. The storms, which were under advisory until 9:15 p.m., knocked over loose outdoor objects and created hazardous driving conditions.
Areas Impacted
Communities affected included Mount Airy, Fairview, Flat Rock, Dobson, Pilot Mountain, Cana, and Mountain Park. Heavy downpours caused reduced visibility and ponding on roads, raising the risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas.
Safety Reminders During Storms
Officials urged residents to seek shelter indoors and avoid flooded intersections. The NWS also shared key lightning safety tips:
- Move indoors at the first sound of thunder.
- Avoid corded phones, plumbing, and electrical equipment.
- Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.
Driving Hazards
Drivers were reminded to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and avoid puddles that can cause hydroplaning. The NWS warned that standing water can pull vehicles off roadways and damage mechanical systems.
Friday’s storms were part of a late-September pattern of unsettled weather that continues to bring thunderstorm risks across North Carolina.
