Northern Indiana Weekend Forecast: Highs in 80s With Dry, Windy Conditions Raising Fire Risk
FORT WAYNE, IN – Northern Indiana is heading into a very warm and dry weekend, but the National Weather Service (NWS) is cautioning that Sunday’s winds could elevate fire risks across the region.
Highs in the 80s Through the Weekend
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Northern Indiana, temperatures will remain well above average for early October.
- Friday: Highs between 84 and 87 degrees under clear skies.
- Saturday: Similar conditions, with highs again reaching the mid-to-upper 80s.
- Sunday: Slightly cooler, topping out between 83 and 86 degrees.
The warm stretch is expected to continue into early next week before gradually trending downward.
Sunday Brings Biggest Concerns
While temperatures will stay pleasant, Sunday’s breezy weather could cause issues. The NWS says winds are expected to increase across the region, with gusts reaching 20 to 25 miles per hour in cities such as South Bend, Michigan City, and Warsaw.
Combined with dry ground conditions, these winds may significantly raise the risk of field and brush fires, particularly in rural and open areas.
The NWS warned: “Dry and breezy conditions Sunday may lead to an elevated fire risk.”
Advisory for Communities and Travelers
Residents across Allen, St. Joseph, Elkhart, LaPorte, and surrounding counties are being urged to avoid outdoor burning through the weekend.
The NWS also cautioned travelers that shifting winds could make driving more difficult, especially along open stretches of highways.
