Minneapolis School Mass Shooting Leaves 2 Children Dead, 17 Others Injured as Police Probe Motive
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – A horrific mass shooting inside a Minneapolis church during the first school Mass of the year left two children dead and 17 others wounded, as investigators search for the gunman’s motive.
Attack at Annunciation Catholic Church
According to The New York Times, the attack unfolded Wednesday morning around 8:30 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church, where students had gathered for their first Mass of the new academic year.
Authorities said the shooter opened fire from outside the church, using a rifle to shoot through windows at children and worshipers inside.
The gunman was heavily armed, carrying a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, and struck both students and older parishioners in the pews.
Victims and Casualties
Officials confirmed the deaths of an 8-year-old child and a 10-year-old child.
Of the 17 injured, 14 were children and three were adults in their 80s. Several victims remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Shooter’s Background Under Review
Police said the suspect was found dead following the shooting. Investigators are reviewing his social media posts, diary-style videos, and drawings, which reportedly included disturbing references to killing children and a sketch of the church sanctuary.
Authorities also found recordings showing weapons, ammunition, and what appeared to be explosive devices.
Community in Shock
Local officials described the attack as a deliberate act of violence against innocent children and worshipers.
One community leader stressed:
“Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying. It was the first week of school. They should be learning with their friends and playing on the playground.”
The shooting has reignited national debates over gun safety, school security, and mental health. Vigils are being planned across Minneapolis as families and students mourn the devastating loss.
