Michigan’s RX Kids Program Expands to Support More Mothers and Children

DETROIT, MICHIGAN — A Michigan program designed to give families a stronger start during pregnancy and early childhood is expanding its reach. RX Kids, founded by Dr. Mona Hanna — the pediatrician whose research exposed the Flint water crisis — has announced it is now available in more communities.

How the Program Works

The RX Kids initiative provides direct cash support to expectant mothers and new parents. Families receive a one-time $1,500 payment during mid-pregnancy and an additional $500 per month for six months after the baby is born.

Dr. Hanna explained that the program’s simplicity is key: “The program is universal for everyone in the community, and that makes it easy to understand who is eligible.”

New Communities Added

Originally launched in Flint, RX Kids is now active in nine communities across Michigan. The latest expansion includes Royal Oak Township and Hazel Park, where every mother who is at least 16 weeks pregnant or has a baby born after enrollment begins is eligible to join.

Flexibility for Families

Unlike other assistance programs, RX Kids allows families to decide how to spend the money. Some use it for diapers, rent, or strollers, while others rely on the monthly payments for daycare costs.

Former recipient Celeste Lord-Timlin described the impact: “The first half of the $1,500 was used for a stroller. The $500 monthly payment helped with daycare — we were shocked at how much daycare costs. My husband and I both work full-time.”

Addressing Poverty and Health

Dr. Hanna called RX Kids a “prescription for health, hope, and opportunity”, saying the goal is to “prescribe away poverty” by giving families the resources they need to improve their child’s early life outcomes.

How to Apply

The application process takes about 10 minutes to complete and can be accessed online through the RX Kids website.

Looking Ahead

Supporters say expanding RX Kids will not only help individual families but also improve overall community health, stability, and opportunity for Michigan’s youngest residents.
