Michigan Winter Forecast: Farmer’s Almanac Predicts Mild Season With Snowy Pockets

MICHIGAN – While summer still lingers, forecasters are already looking ahead to the 2025–2026 winter season, and predictions show Michigan could see a mild but still unpredictable winter.

Almanac Predicts a Mixed Season

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, much of the country will experience near-normal to slightly warmer temperatures. However, some regions will face bursts of bitter cold and heavier snow.

For Michigan, the outlook suggests a mild and somewhat dry season, though lake-effect snow is expected to bring patchy events between December and March.

Don’t lose track of your snow shovels and umbrellas,” said Carol Connare, the almanac’s editor. “Most areas will experience near-normal to slightly milder temperatures, but pockets of cold and snow will still make their mark.”

Snowiest Periods for Michigan

The almanac highlights several stretches when Michiganders may see the most snowfall:

  • Mid-to-late November
  • Most of December
  • Early and late January
  • Early February
  • Early to mid-March

What Else to Expect This Winter

  • Temperatures: Above normal for much of Michigan, with the coldest spells in late December, January, and early February.
  • Precipitation: Drier than usual overall, though snow pockets remain possible.
  • Snowfall: Below-normal in many areas, but lake-effect regions could still see higher totals.

The Almanac’s long-range forecast is based on solar patterns, historical weather trends, and solar cycle activity, along with influences from a weakening La Niña and shifts in the polar vortex.

How Accurate Are These Forecasts?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has published seasonal outlooks for over 200 years, claiming an 80 percent accuracy rate. However, accuracy varies year to year. The winter of 2023–2024 had a much lower success rate at 64 percent, largely due to abnormal global weather patterns.
