Michigan Marine Alert: Strong Winds and 10-Foot Waves Create Dangerous Conditions on Lakes
DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Boaters and swimmers are being urged to stay cautious as strong northeast winds and hazardous waves sweep across Michigan’s Great Lakes through Wednesday morning.
Advisories in Effect
The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued Small Craft Advisories for multiple zones, including:
- Outer Saginaw Bay to Harbor Beach
- Inner Saginaw Bay
- Harbor Beach to Port Huron
- Michigan waters of Lake Erie
These advisories began Tuesday afternoon and will continue into Wednesday morning, with some extending into the afternoon hours.
Hazards for Swimmers
In addition, Beach Hazard Statements have been posted for Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties, warning of dangerous currents and high surf. Conditions could persist into Wednesday morning, creating serious risks for swimmers and beachgoers.
Wind and Wave Forecast
Winds are forecast to blow at 15–20 knots, gusting to 30 knots. Waves will range from 3 to 7 feet, with occasional peaks near 10 feet, making conditions treacherous for small boats and shoreline activity.
Safety Guidance
The weather service strongly advises against boating or swimming in the affected areas until conditions improve. Officials emphasize that even experienced swimmers and boaters may face life-threatening hazards under these conditions.
With high winds and waves battering the lakes, Michigan residents are reminded that safety should take priority over recreation.
