Michigan Man Riding Harley Wrong Way on U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach Killed in Crash

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A 55-year-old man from Cadillac, Michigan, was killed Tuesday night when his motorcycle collided head-on with a car while traveling the wrong way on U.S. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Crash Details

The crash occurred around 9:33 p.m. on Sept. 2 in north Ormond Beach, just south of Pine Tree Boulevard.

Troopers said the 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was headed southbound in the northbound inside lane when it struck a 2014 Acura traveling north.

The driver of the Acura, a Palm Coast resident, was not injured. The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

Part of a Deadly Weekend for Motorcyclists

The tragedy marked the second fatal motorcycle crash in the area within three days.

On Aug. 31, a 32-year-old Daytona Beach man died when his Harley-Davidson slammed into the back of a boat trailer on International Speedway Boulevard, about three miles west of Interstate 95.

Like the Michigan rider, he was also not wearing a helmet, according to the FHP.

Helmet Safety in Focus

Both crashes highlight the dangers of riding without a helmet, which remains optional for some riders under Florida law. Safety advocates continue to stress that helmets significantly reduce the risk of death and severe head injuries in motorcycle crashes.
