Metro Detroit Feels Fall-Like Weather as Labor Day Approaches

DETROIT – Metro Detroit residents are getting an early taste of autumn this week, as fall-like temperatures settle in across Southeast Michigan.

Highs that would normally be near 80 degrees in late August failed to reach 70 in some areas Monday, while overnight lows dipped far below seasonal averages.

Cooler Days and Chilly Nights

Forecasters say the cool pattern will linger through the week:

  • Monday night: Lows dropped into the upper 30s in northern towns like Sandusky and Lapeer, with suburbs across Metro Detroit in the 40s and areas near the city closer to 50 degrees. For comparison, normal lows this time of year sit in the lower 60s.
  • Tuesday: Expect partly cloudy skies with highs in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees. Morning and nighttime temperatures will stay cold, with many spots dipping into the upper 40s by late evening — near record-low levels for August.
  • Wednesday: A slight warm-up arrives with highs in the low-to-mid 70s, but nighttime lows will still be chilly, in the lower 50s.

Rain Chances and a Holiday Warm-Up

Most of the week will remain dry, though forecasters note a couple of rain chances:

  • A passing shower may appear south of I-94 on Tuesday.
  • A cold front Thursday could bring more widespread showers and a chance of thunderstorms by the afternoon and evening.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, temperatures will gradually rise into the mid-to-upper 70s by Monday. High pressure behind Thursday’s cold front should bring dry and mostly sunny conditions for the holiday, making it ideal for outdoor plans like orchard visits and family gatherings.

Early Signs of Fall

The cool, crisp air has arrived just in time for what many consider the “unofficial end of summer.” For students starting the school year, the change means jackets and hoodies will be needed in the mornings.
