Major Ramp Closures Coming to I-94 and Southfield Freeway in Allen Park Starting Fall 2026
ALLEN PARK, MICHIGAN – Drivers in Allen Park should prepare for major traffic detours beginning fall 2026, when key interchange ramps connecting Southfield Freeway and Interstate 94 will close for several months of construction.
Details of the Closures
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the southbound Southfield Freeway ramps to both eastbound and westbound I-94 will be closed from mid-September to early December 2026.
Drivers traveling from Southfield Freeway to eastbound I-94 will be detoured onto Ford Road, McGraw Avenue, and Weir Street.
For westbound I-94, the detour will send traffic to Ford Road, southbound Wyoming Avenue, and Michigan Avenue.
Additional 2026 Closure Planned
MDOT said the southbound Southfield Freeway ramp to eastbound I-94 will also close again in spring 2026 for a separate construction phase expected to last most of the year.
Scope of the Project
The $8.9 million project, funded through the Rebuilding Michigan program, includes:
- Bridge resurfacing
- Replacement of bridge approaches and bearings
- Patching of rails and beams
- Epoxy overlay for longer durability
Officials estimate the work will support 85 construction jobs.
Part of a Larger I-94 Upgrade
The Allen Park improvements will coincide with a larger four-year I-94 reconstruction project stretching from east of Interstate 275 to Michigan Avenue, covering parts of Detroit and Dearborn.
