Japanese Auto Supplier Astemo Picks Michigan for $95M Regional HQ, Adding 200 Jobs in Wixom

WIXOM, MICHIGAN – Michigan scored a major economic win as Astemo Ltd., a leading Japanese automotive supplier, announced plans to build a $95 million regional headquarters in Wixom, creating 200 new jobs and reinforcing the state’s status as the center of the auto industry, according to MLive.

Whitmer Announces Investment During Trade Mission

Governor Gretchen Whitmer revealed the deal during her trade mission in Japan, highlighting it as evidence that Michigan remains competitive in attracting global automotive leaders.

“Today’s investment is further proof that Michigan is open for business and on the move,” Whitmer said. “I’ll work with anyone to strengthen Michigan’s auto ecosystem and bring jobs and investments back home to our state.” Her remarks were reported by MLive.

Astemo ultimately selected Michigan over a competing site in Ohio, with the new HQ to be built just 10 miles from its current North American base in Farmington Hills.

Company Leaders on Why They Chose Michigan

Astemo President & CEO Kohei Takeuchi said the Wixom expansion would showcase the company’s cutting-edge capabilities and help recruit skilled engineers.

“Astemo’s investment in Wixom cements its presence in Michigan and enhances the state’s standing as the best-in-nation for the automotive industry,” Takeuchi said in remarks published by MLive.

The company specializes in electric powertrains, chassis systems, and autonomous driving innovations, all areas where Michigan has sought to expand leadership.

Local Officials Celebrate

Oakland County Executive David Coulter called the project a win for the region’s workforce.

“It is always so gratifying to see how successful we can be when state and local leaders collaborate to attract and retain businesses like Astemo America,” Coulter told MLive.

Wixom officials said more than 150 of the 200 jobs will be engineering positions, a major boost to the state’s talent pipeline. City Manager Steven Brown added that the city looks forward to supporting the development of Astemo’s state-of-the-art facility.

Astemo’s Global Reach

Astemo employs 15,000 workers across North America and more than 80,000 worldwide. The company also offers training and tuition reimbursement programs, providing new opportunities for Michigan’s skilled workforce, according to company reports.

This is the second Japanese trade mission led by Governor Whitmer, following her 2023 visit that also secured new international investments.
