State of Emergency Issued

Genesee County Declares State of Emergency Following Grand Blanc Church Attack

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN — Genesee County officials have declared a local state of emergency in response to the deadly attack at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that left four people dead and eight others hospitalized Sunday.

County Steps In After Township Declaration

Delrico J. Loyd, chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, signed the countywide declaration Monday, echoing a similar move already made by Grand Blanc Township.

“We stand with the victims of this senseless act of violence and destruction that has struck at the heart of our community,” Loyd said. “Making this declaration ensures that we are doing everything in our power to protect our community, provide the necessary support, and stand shoulder to shoulder during this time of grief.”

What the Emergency Declaration Means

Under Michigan law, a state of emergency declaration activates emergency operations plans and authorizes immediate assistance. The move allows Genesee County to:

  • Request additional support from the State of Michigan
  • Deploy emergency personnel and equipment as needed
  • Expedite aid to residents and organizations directly affected by the attack

Officials emphasized the declaration is aimed at ensuring rapid delivery of resources for victims, families, and the broader community still reeling from the violence.

Flags Lowered, Community in Mourning

Across the county, flags have been lowered to honor the victims. The FBI continues to investigate the incident as an act of targeted violence, while local leaders are working with state agencies to coordinate assistance.

The tragedy has left a lasting scar on Grand Blanc, with residents grappling with grief and searching for healing in its aftermath.
