Doctors Warn K-Pop TikTok Noodle Challenge Causing Surge in Childhood Burn Injuries
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — Medical professionals are warning parents about a dangerous new TikTok trend where children attempt to mimic characters from the hit Netflix film K-Pop Demon Hunters by eating steaming bowls of instant noodles. The challenge has led to a spike in serious childhood burn injuries.
How the Trend Started
The viral challenge, using hashtags like #KPopNoodleChallenge and #DemonHuntersRamen, encourages fans to slurp instant noodles as the characters do in the movie. But the tall, narrow containers often used for ramen are unstable and easily tipped over, spilling boiling broth and noodles onto children.
Severe Injuries Reported
Doctors at Shriners Children’s Boston say they have already treated at least eight young patients this year for burns linked to the trend.
“Water boils at 212 degrees, and the design of these cups makes them extremely easy to tip over,” said Dr. Colleen Ryan, associate surgeon at the hospital.
“The noodles are sticky and retain heat, which means these burns can be deeper and more damaging than a simple hot water scald.”
Registered nurse Jason Bresky of Bridgeport Hospital added that some children required hospital stays for recovery. He urged parents to keep kids away from microwaves and hot soups without supervision.
Burn Risks Are Well Known
A decade-long study from the University of Chicago found that instant noodles account for one-third of all childhood burn injuries. Medical experts stress that children’s thinner skin makes them especially vulnerable.
Shriners noted this isn’t the first time viral food challenges have led to injuries. In 2024, the DIY Tanghulu candied fruit trend sent dozens of kids to hospitals with second- and third-degree burns.
Commercial Tie-In Adds Popularity
The trend grew even bigger after Nongshim, maker of Shin Ramyun, released a limited-edition collaboration with K-Pop Demon Hunters. The themed noodles sold out online within days, fueling more social media challenges.
What to Do if a Burn Occurs
Doctors advise removing clothing from the burned area and applying cool tap water for at least 20 minutes. Ice should never be used. Severe cases require immediate medical attention.
As K-Pop Demon Hunters continues to dominate Netflix with over 236 million views, medical professionals are pleading with families to prioritize safety over viral fame.
