Dearborn Man Critically Injured After SUV Attack, Had Warned Police About Safety Concerns Days Earlier
DEARBORN, MICHIGAN – A man who remains hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by an SUV in Dearborn had visited police just days earlier to raise concerns for his own safety, authorities confirmed Sunday.
Late-Night Crash on Michigan Avenue
The incident happened around 10:45 p.m. Saturday near Michigan Avenue and Howe Street. Police say the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was crossing the street when the SUV veered out of the westbound lanes into eastbound traffic, accelerated, and struck him.
Witnesses told investigators the collision appeared deliberate. A preliminary police review supports that view, with officials describing the crash as “intentional.” Emergency responders provided life-saving treatment at the scene before the man was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Suspect Arrested
After the crash, witnesses followed the SUV until the driver abandoned the vehicle several blocks away. The motorist then fled on foot.
Shortly afterward, a 38-year-old Dearborn man called police dispatch and identified himself as the driver. He told officers he was waiting for them at his home. Police took him into custody without incident. The suspect is now being held at the Dearborn city jail as prosecutors review possible charges.
Victim Had Previously Raised Safety Concerns
Dearborn police also revealed that the victim had come to the station just days before the crash to express concern for his safety. He reportedly asked for an update regarding an alleged assault that had occurred on Thursday, only two days before he was hit.
Investigators are now reviewing that prior visit to determine if it had any connection to Saturday’s incident. Police have not yet confirmed whether the suspect and victim knew each other.
Police Response and Community Transparency
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin released a statement following the crash, acknowledging both the seriousness of the incident and public concern:
“Public safety is our highest priority, and we take every concern seriously. We understand the community has questions and are committed to ensuring trust through transparency and accountability.”
The department emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and pledged to release more details as they become available.
Community Concerns Over Safety
The case has heightened anxieties in Dearborn, where residents say pedestrian safety and late-night violence remain persistent concerns. Michigan Avenue is one of the city’s busiest corridors, and traffic incidents in the area have drawn attention from both city officials and community advocates.
The revelation that the victim had specifically approached police before the crash is fueling debate over how effectively authorities respond when residents express fear for their safety.
