Boater Rescued After Hit-and-Run Crash With Pontoon in Grand Traverse Bay

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MICHIGAN — Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run boating crash on Grand Traverse Bay that left one man stranded after his vessel was struck by a pontoon boat early Sunday morning.

Crash in the Bay

The incident occurred around 1:22 a.m. on Aug. 31, when a man crossing West Grand Traverse Bay in a 26-foot boat was hit by a northbound pontoon with no lights on, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

After the collision, the pontoon continued north into the bay without stopping.

Boater Calls for Help

The victim was unable to identify the pontoon but immediately called 911 and put on a life jacket. Deputies responded, rescued the man, and towed his boat back to shore. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Pontoon Boat Damage Expected

Police believe the pontoon involved will have damage to the front of the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting in the search for the suspect watercraft.
