Baltimore County School Zone Speeding Fines to Increase Starting October 1
TOWSON, MARYLAND — Drivers in Baltimore County will soon face higher fines for speeding in school zones as a new penalty system goes into effect on Tuesday, October 1.
New Tiered Fine Structure
The Baltimore County Police Department announced a tiered schedule aimed at discouraging unsafe driving near schools. Penalties will now range from $40 for minor violations to $425 for the most severe cases.
- 12–15 mph over the limit: $40
- 16–19 mph over: $70
- 20–29 mph over: $120
- 30–39 mph over: $230
- 40+ mph over: $425
Goal: Protecting Students and Communities
Police officials say the tougher penalties are designed to enhance student safety and reduce crashes in school zones. Officers will be actively enforcing the new fines during drop-off and pick-up hours, when traffic congestion is highest.
“Slow down, protect kids, and your wallet,” the department posted in its community alert.
