The San Joaquin River's escalating water levels, due to ongoing snowmelt, has led emergency officials to warn residents of potential outdoor dangers. The San Joaquin County Office of Emergency has cautioned against water activities such as swimming and boating, specifically in parts of Lathrop, including Mossdale Landing and the Dos Reis Campgrounds.

Tiffany Heyer, director of the San Joaquin County OES, expressed particular concern for the river's southern stretch. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, local authorities anticipate an influx of outdoor enthusiasts. Jaime Hernandez, camp host at Dos Reis, predicts a bustling weekend at the campgrounds, despite current water activity restrictions due to rising water levels, cold temperatures, and swift water flow caused by snowmelt.

"Despite the seemingly calm surface, undercurrents may be much faster and contain potential debris posing a drowning risk," warned Heyer.

However, not all visitors are heeding the posted warnings. Signs and barriers were erected at Dos Reis campgrounds to deter people from approaching the water. Nevertheless, Hernandez reports several individuals have moved barriers to access the river, a trend he hopes will cease for public safety.

Officials also voiced concerns over the levees, which have been under considerable pressure recently, leading to boating restrictions. Heyer advises those needing to navigate the area to do so cautiously, keeping speeds below five miles per hour to prevent additional strain on the levee systems.

As a safety measure, patrol units will be active over the weekend, with Hernandez also on duty to caution visitors against crossing signage and barriers. County officials recommend checking site maps on their website to be aware of any hazardous areas before planning outdoor activities.
