A devastating accident early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 21-year-old pregnant woman after a vehicle plunged into Whiskey Slough, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Stockton division.
The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. when a 27-year-old man driving a 2008 gray Honda Fit lost control on Highway 4 near Whiskey Slough Road. Witnesses reported seeing the car moving recklessly at speeds of 65 mph and crossing double yellow lines before veering off the road and into the water.
The driver, who sustained no injuries, managed to escape the submerged vehicle and flag down passing motorists for assistance. Tragically, his 21-year-old wife, who was six months pregnant, did not survive.
Rescue efforts began as officers searched for the car, which had sunk out of sight. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office boating team located the vehicle, and the Sacramento-based Drowning Accident Rescue Team (DART) was called in to recover the woman’s body.
The CHP noted that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash and that they are continuing to contact witnesses to determine what led to the vehicle losing control.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of road conditions and the importance of road safety
