A Lodi family is calling their 22-month-old child, Sofia Lorenzi, a miracle after she survived an accident where doctors had already declared her dead.
Sofia wandered off while playing with her siblings on Ash Wednesday and was later found unconscious in the family's jacuzzi.
Sofia's father, Pablo Lorenzi, discovered her and immediately called for help. The family performed CPR on Sofia until EMS arrived, who then continued CPR efforts before rushing her to Adventist Lodi Memorial Hospital.
Despite numerous attempts to resuscitate Sofia and administering 15 rounds of epinephrine, she remained unresponsive. The doctors declared her dead at 17:47 on Ash Wednesday.
However, 18 minutes later, a nurse noticed that Sofia was breathing. Doctors stabilized her, and she was eventually transferred to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.
An MRI showed that she had defied all odds, as her brain appeared to be intact. Sofia is currently undergoing outpatient recovery in New Orleans.
The Lorenzi family has set up a GoFundMe account to cover expenses, including treatment, temporary housing, transportation, and meals. They expect to return to their Lodi home by August.
