Stockton’s Overcrowded Shelters

Yellow Line
|

The streets are filled with pets on the loose. Sadly, there has been an upswing in dogs on the street, due to overcrowding in shelters.

These once pets now remain locked up and at risk, with adoption rates lowering everyday. The city has tried to up its social media presence for these shelters but with low engagements, they have reached a “critical condition” which leaves zero room for any new animals. A bit from the ABC10 article says “High shelter populations and dwindling adoption rates are being felt in regions across the country, which, according to Stockton police, may be partially due to the state of the economy. Since most people have returned to work and inflation rates have risen, they are spending less time at home and find they don’t have the means to care for their animals," said Kluza.” Officials have looked at even lowering costs for things such as neutering/spaying to help out the average owner.

What do you think the overcrowding in shelters is due to? Can and should we help? If you would like to read more Visit Abc10.
