Stockton, Calif. — On January 17, 1989, the Cleveland Elementary School shooting in Stockton left an indelible mark on the community. As the 35th anniversary of the tragic event is observed, survivors, including teachers, are turning their pain into action to combat gun violence.

Judy Weldon, a second-grade teacher at Cleveland Elementary during the shooting, vividly recalls the horrifying day when a gunman unleashed over 100 rounds with an assault weapon on the playground, resulting in the loss of five students and injuries to 30, including a teacher.

“The shooting happens, but it is not over and done with that day. It ripples on for years and years,” reflects Weldon.

In response to the tragedy, Weldon and a group of teachers founded the Cleveland School Remembers organization, committed to raising awareness about gun violence. Their initiatives include educational efforts, community outreach, and advocacy for legislative change.

“If I am walking and alive, I need to do something,” emphasizes Weldon.

Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln acknowledges the significant role of community organizations like Cleveland School Remembers in the city's strategy to reduce gun violence. He affirms the city's dedication to working tirelessly to prevent further loss of life due to senseless acts of gun violence.

Rob Young, a survivor of the 1989 shooting, vividly remembers the chaos of the playground, the gunshots, and the tragic loss of a young boy just feet away from him.

"The young boy that was killed was shot just a few feet from me. I watched him go down. Something you never forget," recalls Young.

In the pursuit of healing and giving back to the community, Young, who was a 6-year-old first-grade student during the incident, transformed his traumatic experience into a commitment to protect children. He fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer, working within the school district to safeguard schools.

“Every time I hear another school shooting, my heart breaks,” shares Young. Sharing his story becomes a way for him to contribute to the healing process.

As Stockton commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Cleveland Elementary School shooting, survivors and advocates continue their unwavering efforts to turn tragedy into positive action.
