A Stockton Police Department sergeant was shot on Wednesday morning while responding to a carjacking incident near Gateway Court and Kentfield Road. The incident took place on August 2, 2023.The police department swiftly identified a suspect in connection with the shooting and carjacking, leading to their arrest. The suspect has been identified as Sunthawon "Benny" Savon, a 20-year-old resident of Stockton. Savon was taken into custody and booked into San Joaquin County Jail.
The carjacking victim, a 69-year-old man, experienced the harrowing incident just before 3 a.m. in the 700 block of Bedlow Drive. He suffered moderate to severe injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, the police department expressed gratitude to the community for their patience and support during the ongoing investigation.
As of now, the sergeant is in stable condition, and SWAT teams detained several persons of interest in connection to the shooting before identifying and arresting the main suspect, Sunthawon Savon.
