Stockton Police Make Key Arrests And Investigate Homicide In A Night Of Intense Activity

STOCKTON, CA — A series of significant police actions took place in Stockton on the night of May 4, 2024, as detailed in the latest report from the Watch Commanders. The night's events included weapons arrests, a vehicle pursuit, and a homicide investigation, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in the city.

The first incident occurred around 6:00 PM at the intersection of Hammer Lane and Mariners Drive in the Lakeview District. Stockton Police Officers conducted a routine traffic stop which led to the discovery of a loaded handgun in the vehicle. The two occupants, Melvin McCoy, 23, and Jailin Young, 21, were arrested on weapons charges without incident, preventing potential violence.

Later in the evening, at approximately 11:38 PM, officers attempted another enforcement stop at Country Club Boulevard and Fraser Avenue in the Civic Center District. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Yimi Mendoza, failed to comply, initiating a high-speed pursuit. The chase ended when Mendoza lost control and crashed into a tree. He was taken into custody on traffic charges, thankfully without further complications.

The most grave incident of the night occurred in the early hours, at 3:33 AM, near Park Street and Sierra Nevada Street in the Park District. Police responded to reports of a shooting and found a 25-year-old male suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to his injuries. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, which is still in its early stages, with no motive or suspect information released at this time.
