In an unexpected twist of holiday magic, Stockton Police officers played the role of Santa Claus for neighborhoods impacted by crime in the 24th annual Officer Matt Smith Toy Project. Early Sunday morning, the police department's caravan of goodwill, loaded with new bikes, toys, and groceries, visited families to spread joy and warmth during the festive season.

One such recipient, 14-year-old Joannie Martinez, shared her surprise and delight at the unexpected visit. "It was unexpected, it was great," exclaimed Martinez as officers knocked on her door, turning the sounds of police sirens into a symphony of holiday cheer.

Stockton Police Chief Stan McFadden emphasized the passion of the men and women in the department who willingly sacrificed time with their families on Christmas Eve to participate in the heartwarming event. The project aimed to connect with families impacted by violence, bringing smiles to their faces and diverting their thoughts from past traumas.

The Officer Matt Smith Toy Project, named after its 24th-year commemoration, involved collecting over 1,000 toys and culminated in a festive loading event at Stockton's Arroyo's Cafe. Volunteers, including officers and community members, loaded up cars, ambulances, and even a SWAT truck with gifts before embarking on their mission to spread holiday joy.

Chief McFadden expressed gratitude to the detectives who maintained connections with the families throughout the year, even beyond the initial trauma. The surprise visits, likened to chasing the Grinch and finding Santa Claus by one grateful parent, brought a wave of joy and gratitude to many households.

Jose Cardenas, whose children received free gifts, expressed, "You guys made our day." Chief McFadden, overwhelmed by the impact, announced the department's commitment to bring back the annual event for the 25th time next year.

"It's overwhelming," said McFadden. "And it just reminds us all of how powerful we are together."
