Stockton Metropolitan Airport, a key air traffic hub in San Joaquin County, is slated for a significant transformation following the approval of a $26 million upgrade by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. The announcement, made during a recent board meeting, marks a substantial investment in modernizing the five-decade-old facility to better serve the region’s growing needs.

The extensive upgrade plan includes the addition of five new gates, a larger hold room to increase flyer accommodation per hour, and a comprehensive remodeling of the baggage claim area. Noteworthy enhancements to the airport's security and customer service facilities are also on the agenda, with improvements slated for the TSA security area, ticket counters, and the addition of new restrooms and a rent-a-car counter.

One of the largest portions of the budget, approximately $10 million, will be allocated to revitalizing the airport terminal, which has seen minimal updates since its construction in 1965. The terminal’s outdated plumbing and undersized waiting areas, originally designed for much smaller aircraft, will be addressed to alleviate congestion and improve passenger experience.

Further developments include the acquisition of commercial hangars, construction of 38 new aircraft storage hangars, and the addition of 10 units of aircraft sunshade awnings. Plans also feature a redesign of the west ramp, the establishment of a new pilot center, and a self-serve fueling facility. Moreover, part of the funding is earmarked for conducting a siting study for a new air traffic control tower to enhance operational efficiency.

Currently, Allegiant Air is the sole passenger airline operating out of Stockton Metropolitan Airport, with the majority of air traffic composed of cargo and general aviation flights. This comprehensive upgrade is set to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity and functionality, positioning it as a modern hub ready to meet the demands of its diverse users. The project, entirely funded by the county along with $2.5 million from Measure K revenues, underscores a commitment to developing critical infrastructure to support regional growth and connectivity.
