In the early hours of September 17, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in Stockton discovered a large quantity of drugs during what began as a routine welfare check. The incident occurred at an AM/PM gas station on Mariposa Road, just west of State Route 99, after officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the area. While concluding their investigation, officers noticed a man slumped over in the driver's seat of a Toyota Prius. Concerned for his well-being, the officers approached the vehicle to conduct a welfare check, a decision that would lead to a much larger discovery.
At approximately 12:50 a.m., officers approached the vehicle and immediately observed "several small baggies of a white powdery substance" on the man's lap, according to a statement issued by CHP Stockton on Facebook. This raised suspicion, prompting the officers to initiate a probable cause search of the vehicle. What they found was far more than they had anticipated. Inside the car, officers discovered a substantial haul of drugs, including three plastic bags of marijuana, two bags of psilocybin mushrooms (commonly known as magic mushrooms), a container of codeine cough syrup, and various prescription pills. In addition to the drugs, the officers also seized a significant amount of cash, which they suspect may have been tied to the sale of the substances.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was immediately arrested. He now faces multiple charges related to the possession, sales, and transportation of drugs. After the discovery, he was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail, where he awaits further legal proceedings.
