In an effort to address the growing problem of dangerous sideshows on the streets of Stockton, the Stockton 99 Speedway has taken the initiative to provide a safer alternative. They are expanding the focus of their regular 'Drift Days' event to provide an outlet for would-be street racers, with the aim of reducing the risk of accidents and injuries in the town.
For fifteen years, the Speedway has been a host to 'Drift Days', but the event now holds a renewed significance amidst an increasing number of illegal street racing incidents. Tony Noceti, operator of the Speedway, underscored the importance of the initiative, saying, "It scars the properties and people can get killed out there and injured."
All participating vehicles in the Drift Days will undergo a safety inspection and drivers are required to wear helmets - conditions not met in illegal street sideshows. Noceti voiced his hope that participants will not resort to street racing after the event, stating, "We do not go for our group leaving here and doing it out on the street."
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Stockton Police Department have been actively working to curb sideshow activities, with seven arrests and ten car impoundments made in March alone. Authorities endorse the Speedway's event as a safer option compared to the uncontrolled environment of street racing and have vowed to sternly deal with those engaging in such illicit activities, including spectators.
Drift Day, scheduled for June 25th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will also have emergency services personnel on standby and promises an exciting experience for spectators as rookies and veterans hit the course. More Drift Days have been planned for July 22, September 23, October 14, and October 28 this year.
