Families in San Joaquin County are anxiously awaiting updates from loved ones in Israel after a series of missile attacks launched by Iran on Tuesday. The bombings come as a retaliation for Israel's targeting of several Hezbollah leaders in recent weeks, escalating tensions in the region.
Among those affected is a family connected to Rabbi Jason Gwasdoff, who has led Temple Israel in Stockton for 32 years. The family recently experienced the unique and challenging circumstances of a bomb shelter wedding in Tel Aviv. The wedding of Alon and Sapir, which had initially been planned as a grand ceremony with 450 guests, was reduced to 150 attendees after many were called to serve in the reserves. The wedding took a dramatic turn when air raid sirens went off, forcing everyone to take shelter in the building's basement, which also served as a bomb shelter. Despite the chaos, the couple and their guests continued with the celebration.
"They reversed order. They started with the food and the dancing while this bombing was taking place. The all-clear was given, and they went up to the roof of the building and had the chuppah and the wedding ceremony. It speaks to the incredible resiliency of the people of Israel," Rabbi Gwasdoff said.
Meanwhile, San Joaquin County resident Lauri is anxiously waiting for word from her sister in Jerusalem. She shared that her nephew had been wounded in Gaza in early November but has since recovered, while her niece's husband has now been called up for service. "People have been evacuated from the south, the north, people are living in hotels and anywhere else people will take them. This has been going on for a year," Lauri said.
The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region issued a statement condemning the missile attacks. CEO Mariela Socolovsky expressed solidarity with Israel, stating, "The Jewish Federation of the Sacramento region unequivocally condemns Iran’s massive bombardment attacking Israel. Over 180 ballistic missiles were launched by Iran over Israel." The Federation expressed gratitude for the United States' support in defending Israel and for the Iron Dome defense system, which has provided critical protection.
As the conflict continues, families in San Joaquin County and beyond are left hoping for the safety of their loved ones in Israel, trusting in the strength of the Israeli defense forces and the support of the international community.
