Recent advisories from the Seaport and Park Districts have detailed a worrying rise in violent crimes and confrontations with law enforcement, as outlined in the Watch Commander's reports for May 20-22, 2024. These incidents include shootings, a carjacking, and multiple arrests related to resisting law enforcement.

Incidents of Note:

  • Shooting in Seaport District: On May 20, at the intersection of Aurora Street and Anderson Street, a 36-year-old male was shot by three armed suspects who exited a dark sedan. The victim, who was merely walking near the location, was promptly taken to a local hospital. The suspects are described as three Hispanic male adults.

  • Resisting Arrest: Later that same evening, on the 300 Block of South Center Street, a routine traffic stop escalated when both occupants of the vehicle resisted arrest. Identified as Ronnie Smith, 44, and Thomas Harris, 54, the individuals were subsequently arrested on charges of resisting arrest and other traffic-related offenses.

  • Second Shooting Incident: Early on May 21, a 31-year-old female fell victim to a drive-by shooting at the corner of Sierra Nevada Street and Park Street. She was hospitalized, and the suspects remain unidentified.

Further Law Enforcement Actions:

  • Weapon Arrest: On May 21, in the Seaport District, officers stopped Javon Perkins, 27, for traffic violations. Perkins fled on foot but was apprehended after a short pursuit and a taser deployment. A firearm was found on his property, and he was booked on multiple charges, including weapon possession and resisting arrest.

  • Battery on an Officer: On the same day, Jasmine Khaton, 37, was arrested for battery on an officer following an altercation involving an apartment manager on Rose Marie Lane.

  • Carjacking Incident: By May 22, violence escalated with a carjacking on Pershing Avenue near the Calaveras River. A 64-year-old male victim confronted a young Hispanic male who was stealing his dirt bike. The suspect brandished a firearm, threatened the victim, and fled with the bike.

These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges in the area, prompting local police to increase patrols and community outreach efforts to curb the rising tide of violence and ensure public safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to the authorities.
