Recall Attempt Against Stockton Unified Board President Fizzles Out

Written by Daniel Garza | Oct 5, 2023 11:00:37 AM

Efforts to recall Stockton Unified Board President AngelAnn Flores have been halted. Initiated in June, the recall petition has now been formally withdrawn. To qualify for a recall election, proponents required signatures from 20% of Stockton Unified’s Area 2 registered voters, which translates to 2,250 out of 11,250. Yet, no signatures were ever submitted to the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters.

Assistant Registrar of Voters, Eric Diaz, confirmed the receipt of a withdrawal request, in which the submitter justified the decision by citing the upcoming general election's timeline.

The recall was spearheaded by Melissa Garibay Ortiz, a Stockton Unified parent and previous electoral contender to Flores. Although she trailed Flores in the November elections, Ortiz had indicated her intention to challenge Flores again. However, she has been silent on the recall's recent developments.

In response to the recall efforts, Flores highlighted possible "ulterior motives" behind the move, asserting that it seemed more of a distraction than a genuine initiative. She called for unity and encouraged community members to collaborate for the school system's betterment.

Flores secured a strong lead in her reelection in November 2022, garnering 1,128 votes, which constituted 37.92% of the total, in stark contrast to Ortiz's 538 votes, which represented 18.1% of the total.
