STOCKTON — The Stockton Ports faced a challenging afternoon on Education Day, issuing an excessive number of walks that led to a 9-2 defeat against the Fresno Grizzlies at the Stockton ballpark. The Ports' pitchers struggled with their control throughout the game, walking a total of 13 batters, which Fresno capitalized on to secure their victory.

A68A9414The pivotal moment came early in the game during a disastrous seven-run second inning for the Ports. Starting pitcher Drew Conover issued three consecutive walks to load the bases, setting the stage for Fresno's scoring spree. The Grizzlies scored their first run on another walk, followed by a sacrifice fly and a base hit that extended their lead to 3-0. The situation worsened when Fresno shortstop Andy Perez hit a grand slam off reliever Mark Adamiak, catapulting the Grizzlies to a 7-0 advantage.

Despite the rough start, the Ports did manage to find some highlights later in the game. In the fifth inning, first baseman Darlyn Montero hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, marking one of the few offensive sparks for Stockton. Montero, who recently stopped switch-hitting, has shown promising signs at the plate, hitting .412 over his last five games.

Stockton attempted a late rally in the bottom of the eighth, drawing a series of walks to load the bases. Nate Nankil earned an RBI by drawing a walk to make it 9-2, but the rally fizzled out as Montero was struck out to end the inning.
