The parents of Alycia Reynaga, a 15-year-old girl who was fatally stabbed at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Stockton, California, on April 18, 2022, have filed a lawsuit against the Stockton Unified School District, its former superintendent, and the high school principal, among other employees.
The lawsuit alleges that the school district failed to ensure their daughter's safety while on campus, resulting in her death.
The complaint states that the alleged killer, Anthony Gray, entered the school through an unsupervised and unlocked gate, and was not affiliated with the school. He allegedly chased students and attempted to enter locked doors before stabbing Alycia multiple times, leading to her death. The lawsuit alleges that the school district and its employees have a responsibility to protect and supervise children while on campus and failed to take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized trespassers.
The complaint also claims that the school district failed to increase student protection after previous violent events at SUSD schools and eliminated the position responsible for safety drills, education, and compliance in April 2021. Gray was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial for Reynaga's death earlier this year and charged with multiple crimes.
The school district has not yet responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the family's damages and a trial by jury. For more on this story check it out on Stocktonia.
