Only One Early Voting Location For San Joaquin County’s 400,000 Voters

As Election Day nears, San Joaquin County voters looking to cast their ballots early have only one option: the Registrar of Voters Office in Stockton. Unlike 29 California counties that offer multiple early voting locations, San Joaquin County, which serves nearly 400,000 registered voters, chose a single in-person early voting site. This decision, made by the Board of Supervisors in 2023, reflects the county’s commitment to a traditional Election Day model, according to Olivia Hale, the county’s Registrar of Voters.

“We’re a traditional polling place by choice,” Hale explained. “The Board directed us to keep the 171 polling locations open only on Election Day.” Hale added that adopting an expanded early voting model would likely mean fewer polling centers, potentially impacting local voters’ access.

Some residents, like voter Francis Deane, are finding the limited early voting options challenging. “I think there should be more places,” said Deane, who visited the registrar’s office to vote early. “I looked online to find a place near my home, but this was the only option.”

The county’s decision has sparked conversations about voter access and convenience, especially as residents balance their daily responsibilities with getting to the single early voting site. For Deane and others, additional locations could ease this burden and offer more accessible voting options, especially in such a populous county.

Despite the limited in-person early voting options, voters have several alternatives. San Joaquin County encourages residents to mail in their ballots or use drop boxes conveniently located throughout the area. For those who prefer or need to vote in person, all 171 polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 5.

Hale assured voters that the county is committed to maintaining accessibility on Election Day and suggested that the chosen model is intended to balance resources effectively. By concentrating voting efforts on Election Day, San Joaquin County aims to ensure every polling location is adequately staffed and ready to serve the large voter population efficiently.

While the single early voting site has sparked debate, San Joaquin County’s focus remains on preparing for a smooth Election Day, with robust staffing and resources across its 171 polling locations. Voters are encouraged to plan their voting method in advance and can stay updated through the Registrar of Voters Office for any additional guidance.
