STOCKTON, CA – A significant stretch of Interstate 5, connecting Stockton to Sacramento, is poised for a comprehensive $123 million overhaul slated to start in the coming weeks, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). This project aims to enhance the heavily trafficked route, which sees over 100,000 vehicles daily.
The "I-5 Anchor Pavement Rehabilitation and Improvement Project" will focus on improving more than 30 miles of pavement and shoulders, extending from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/Sacramento County line. The project, kickstarting the week of June 7, is expected to continue until September 2026.
Funded primarily through federal sources, with $111 million allocated and an additional $12 million from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, the initiative will address various aspects of the interstate. Upgrades will include the replacement of on- and off-ramps at critical junctions such as Eight Mile Road, State Route 12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road with upgraded concrete structures.
Tony Taveras, Caltrans Director, emphasized the benefits of the project, stating, "Residents and commercial drivers who rely on this frequently traveled stretch of I-5 will benefit from a smoother, safer ride as they deliver freight or commute to work, school, or other engagements."
Further enhancements will include bridge rail replacement at Hammer Lane, shoulder extensions, new curb ramps, accessible pedestrian signals, truck-turning improvements, and the replacement of guardrails as needed. Additionally, the project will see the installation of new overhead lighting, changeable message signs, closed-circuit TVs, fiber optics, and vehicle detector stations at various points along the route.
Grace Magsayo, the acting director of Caltrans District 10, added, "This important project will help improve the safe movement of traffic and increase accessibility for all users."
As construction unfolds, drivers traveling between Stockton and Sacramento can expect numerous lane shifts and road closures. Caltrans urges motorists to plan for potential delays and to stay informed about traffic updates throughout the duration of the project.
