LODI, Calif. – Sajad Shakoor, a Lodi native, has turned his life around in a remarkable way since his release from prison a decade ago. Shakoor has successfully climbed up the ranks in the restaurant industry, transforming a Bay Area-based Mediterranean eatery into a thriving franchise with 40 locations across Northern California. His latest venture is set to open in Lodi next year, marking a significant return to his hometown.

Falafel Corner, Shakoor's franchise, will open its doors in Lodi in the spring, located on the corner of Kettleman Lane and Lower Sacramento Road. Shakoor describes this return as the highlight of his life, viewing it as a chance to give back to the community that shaped him.

His journey into the culinary world began in prison, where he served a life sentence for a three-strikes offense committed in 1992. While incarcerated, Shakoor not only helped write Proposition 36, which reformed California’s third-strike law, but also honed his passion for cooking. Working in the chow hall at San Quentin State Prison, he realized his talent and interest in culinary arts.

Upon his release in 2013, Shakoor briefly returned to Lodi before moving to the Bay Area to pursue higher education. His path led him to Falafel Corner in Fremont, where his culinary skills caught the attention of the owner, Massuod Rustakhis. Shakoor quickly rose to the position of store manager and later opened a location in Sacramento, which became a huge success.

In just five years, Shakoor expanded the franchise to 40 locations, including Stockton, Vacaville, Oakland, and Redding. His unique approach to Mediterranean cuisine, infusing it with robust flavors and including popular items like halal burgers, sets Falafel Corner apart.

The upcoming Lodi location holds personal significance for Shakoor, as it's near where he started his working life at Walmart. He aims to ensure that his restaurants offer flavorful and unique culinary experiences.

Shakoor’s story is one of redemption and perseverance. His message is clear: regardless of one's past, focusing on the future with good intentions can open many doors. His return to Lodi with Falafel Corner is not just a business venture but a testament to his journey and contribution to the community.
