Lincoln Unified School District in Stockton has taken a significant step to address the growing issue of student vaping by installing vape detectors in the bathrooms of its high school campuses, including Lincoln High School and Village Oaks High School.

The district, known for its strict no-tobacco policy, has implemented these detectors at the beginning of the school year in response to continued instances of students vaping on campus. "We certainly have seen high school students in years past and even recently this school year, vaping on campus, in particular, the bathrooms," said Tyler Heberle, the district's media specialist.

The newly installed sensors are designed to detect vapors emitted from devices like e-cigarettes and vape pens. When a sensor picks up vapors that fit the criteria, an alert is sent to school administrators, who can then take immediate action.

Students caught with a vape will face disciplinary measures, starting with a referral to a six-week drug, vape, and smoking counseling program. Repeat offenses could lead to more severe consequences, including detention, suspension, or even expulsion if illegal substances are involved.

While the district has chosen not to reveal the appearance of the sensors to prevent tampering, parents like Connie Best are supportive of the initiative. "We should try it," said Best, who expressed concern for her son, a freshman. "I think it's a great idea."

District officials are closely monitoring the effectiveness of the vape detectors and will hold a public meeting at Lincoln High School on Wednesday evening to answer any questions from parents. "We're in this together," Heberle emphasized, acknowledging the support the district has received from the community.

As Lincoln Unified continues to address student vaping, the success of this program could lead to the expansion of vape detectors to other schools within the district.
