A disturbing rise in gun violence incidents involving minors has prompted activists to raise their voices, urging parents to take proactive measures.

The city witnessed two tragic incidents this week: the alleged killing of a 16-year-old by a 17-year-old shooter on Tuesday, and the alleged killing of a 13-year-old by a 16-year-old on Wednesday. These incidents have sparked questions about the underlying causes and the steps that can be taken to prevent further loss of young lives.

Berry Accius, a longstanding advocate and representative of the organization Voice of the Youth, expressed concern over the prevalence of violence in society. "We live in a violent society," Accius remarked, highlighting the anger and desire for dominance often exhibited by individuals. He stressed the tragic reality that even siblings can become victims of such violence, as was the case with the 13-year-old victim allegedly shot and killed by his older brother.

According to the police, the teen who was shot accidentally wounded himself in the hand as well. Accius emphasized the importance of parental involvement, urging parents to monitor their children's social media usage, pay attention to their social circles, and even check their rooms for the presence of weapons. He implored parents not to believe that such incidents could never happen to them and encouraged them to actively engage in their children's lives.

The 16-year-old suspect involved in the recent incident has been placed in juvenile hall in San Joaquin County. The charges include manslaughter, negligent discharge of a firearm, and weapons-related offenses.

In response to these distressing events, the Stockton Unified School District has mobilized its crisis team to provide support for staff and students affected by the tragedies. It is a crucial time for the community to come together, address the root causes of youth violence, and take collective action to ensure the safety and well-being of young individuals.

As the city grapples with these heartbreaking incidents, it is imperative for parents, schools, community organizations, and law enforcement agencies to work collaboratively in creating a safe environment for the youth, fostering open dialogue, and implementing preventive measures to curb the rising tide of gun violence.
