ELK GROVE, Calif. — Caleb McNitt, an Elk Grove middle school teacher, is not just known for his teaching skills but also as a beacon of hope and resilience as a two-time cancer survivor. This inspiring story is reported by Marlee Ginter of CBS Sacramento.

Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the tender age of 10, McNitt experienced what he described as a war zone in hospitals. His mother, Susie McNitt, recalls the heart-wrenching moment when they learned of his diagnosis. Amidst these challenging times, a ray of hope shone through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which granted Caleb’s wish for a Disney cruise with friends.

Susie highlighted the significance of Make-A-Wish, noting that it provided Caleb a sense of control in a situation where he had none. The journey wasn’t easy, but Caleb's resilience and determination saw him through. He has survived cancer twice, enduring treatments including a bone marrow transplant.

Now, in his classroom, Caleb shares his life story with his students, imparting lessons of courage and perseverance. His experiences have made a profound impact on the young minds he teaches, as evidenced by the reflections of 13-year-old student Savon Merchant, who recognizes the challenges Caleb faced.

Caleb recently celebrated 13 years since his last battle with cancer. Though he avoids saying he is cancer-free, preferring the term "cancer survivor," his journey is a testament to the power of hope and endurance.

His story is not only about surviving a life-threatening illness but also about the indomitable spirit of a teacher who continues to inspire and educate in the face of adversity.
