In a recent announcement, San Joaquin Delta College trustees have appointed Dr. Jessie Garza-Roderick, a seasoned educator with an impressive 42-year career, to serve on Delta's governing board. The appointment fills the seat left vacant by Dr. Elizabeth Blanchard, who relocated out of the area in December.
Dr. Garza-Roderick's provisional appointment, lasting until the November 2024 election, aligns with Dr. Blanchard's original term. Representing Area 2 in central Stockton, she expressed her commitment to ensuring students have access to higher education and career opportunities.
"I have a passion within me to make sure students have access to higher education, including career education," Dr. Garza-Roderick stated. "What we do really impacts our community as a whole, and our students of color in particular."
A Delta College dean for 22 years until her retirement in November 2021, Dr. Garza-Roderick played a pivotal role in overseeing the College's expansion in the south county. Notably, she led the Tracy Center for 10 years before establishing the South Campus at Mountain House, where she served for an additional 12 years.
Among her achievements, Dr. Garza-Roderick established the Early College Program, enabling local students to graduate high school with an associate degree. Beyond her educational contributions, she is also a local businesswoman actively involved in various chambers of commerce in the area.
Delta College Superintendent/President Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Garza-Roderick joining the Board of Trustees. "Dr. Garza-Roderick brings a wealth of experience to the Board of Trustees, and I look forward to working with her in that capacity," said Dr. Lawrenson. "The Board’s oversight and guidance are critical to the success of the College, and we will continue to work together to meet the needs of our students and the community."
The selection process involved interviews with three candidates during a special Board meeting, where Dr. Garza-Roderick emerged as the unanimous choice. Board President Dr. Charles Jennings conducted the swearing-in ceremony.
Under state law, the appointment is provisional, allowing the public 30 days from the appointment date to file a petition, containing sufficient signatures, for a special election. If no petition is filed, the appointment becomes effective, marking the beginning of Dr. Jessie Garza-Roderick's contribution to Delta College's leadership team.
