Delta College is mourning the loss of Trustee Valerie Stewart-Green, a dedicated member of the college community who served for nearly three decades, first as an employee and later as a trustee. Stewart-Green, a resident of Tracy for approximately 28 years, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to education and community service.
Stewart-Green worked at Delta College for 22 years, serving as an executive assistant to the superintendent/president, before retiring in 2022. Her passion for education and dedication to the community led her to continue her service as a trustee, representing the communities of Tracy and Mountain House. Appointed to the Board of Trustees in October 2022, she served in this role for nearly two years, advocating for the college’s programs and ensuring they reached all community members.
"I want to make sure that our students have the best opportunities for education and are successful, and that we do what is best for the community," Stewart-Green said upon her appointment to the Board.
Stewart-Green held a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco and was known for her commitment to supporting students, particularly those from underserved communities. Delta College Superintendent/President Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson expressed her sorrow at Stewart-Green’s passing, noting her passion for helping students and ensuring college employees had the support needed to fulfill the college’s mission.
"She was a passionate supporter of students, especially students from underserved communities," Dr. Lawrenson said. "She will be greatly missed by the campus community, and I am grateful for the dedication with which she served the District."
Board of Trustees President Dr. Charles Jennings also shared his condolences, reflecting on Stewart-Green’s unwavering commitment to Delta College and the community. "Since her retirement, she did not fail to step up when her community needed her and continued to work tirelessly as a trustee on their behalf," he said. "I will miss Valerie and the many conversations we had about how best to address the needs of all in our diverse community."
Stewart-Green’s passing is a significant loss for the Delta College community, and she will be remembered for her enduring dedication to education and her community. The college extends its deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
