Stockton, CA, February 13, 2024 - Delta College marked a significant cultural milestone with its first-ever Lunar New Year celebration held in Danner Hall on February 8, 2024. The event, organized by EPIC (Empowering Positive Initiatives for Change), the Associated Students of Delta College (ASDC), and the Asian and Pacific Islander American Staff Association (APIASA), attracted a diverse crowd of students eager to partake in the festivities and learn about the traditions associated with this important holiday.

The celebration comes on the heels of the college officially recognizing Lunar New Year as a holiday, a move that underscores Delta's commitment to inclusivity and cultural awareness. Attendees had the opportunity to indulge in traditional foods, each carrying symbolic meanings of fortune and prosperity, such as dumplings, which are a staple of Lunar New Year celebrations.

Ema Fua, an EPIC member and one of the event's speakers, shared insights into the significance of Lunar New Year and the cultural importance of the food served during the holiday. Susan Vang, the director of EPIC, emphasized the holiday's focus on family and communal well-being. "It's a time for us to stop and give well wishes," Vang said, highlighting the event as a platform for both celebration and cultural exchange among students.

The event not only catered to those who traditionally celebrate Lunar New Year but also aimed to introduce and educate others about the holiday. Sam Taylor, a Delta College student who attended the celebration, expressed his appreciation for the chance to experience and learn about another culture's customs and traditions. "This seems like a cool event," he remarked, reflecting the sentiment of many participants who found the event both informative and enjoyable.

By hosting the Lunar New Year celebration, Delta College takes a significant step forward in promoting cultural understanding and diversity among its student body. Events like these play a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and belonging, allowing students from various backgrounds to share in the joy of each other's cultural heritage.
